The shoes in each of these narrative paintings are intended as metaphors for people. For instance in Corporate Ladder, the shoes are fighting to gain the upper hand on the one below. At the top, the CEO as a sandal, has a life of leisure. The older, used up shoe, at the bottom right, is being spit out of the briefcase's mouth and is no longer needed, as usually happens in our society.
